Elise Parts Gear Linkage Kit

on Fri, 04/12/2009 - 17:00

Gear Stick
The Elise has recently started to struggle when trying to engage reverse gear. When I depress the clutch it feels like the gear leaver has slotted into place but when I press the accelerator I get a nasty spinning metallic sound. It is usually resolved on a second attempt but is rather embarrassing when moving out of a parking space under public view. In general I have never found the Honda PG1 gearbox in the Elise to be particularly smooth and would agree with those that describe it like “stirring coal”.

To try and fix the problem I started by having the gear cable tightened.

Lotus Elise Windscreen Replacement

Lotus Elise Windscreen
The total cost of the job was £1,085, although thankfully I only had to pay the £70 insurance excess and wipe my brow with a sigh of relief. It is the first time in my life I had ever felt like insurance was a valid expenditure. Rewind a week and I’m an emotional mess after a stone flew up on the M25 cracking the Elise’s windscreen. Initially just a deep chip, it quickly developed into a vertical split covering almost the full height of the glass.

According to the fitter handing me the bill it would have been roughly double that figure without the Elephant Insurance discount.

Lotus Elise Battery

Lotus Elise Battery
The Lotus Elise S2 uses a standard 12v lead-acid car battery. The mid-engined configuration and tight packaging sees the battery mounted in the boot just over the left wheel arch and under hunched rear quarter bodywork. This location, while in part most likely good for weight distribution, does slightly reduce the otherwise already limited boot space and can make it a little fiddly to access the terminals if you ever need to connect leads.
